The Broadening Bull Market

Every market cycle has its leaders.
At different points in history, that leadership has come from technology, energy, financials, healthcare, small caps, or value stocks. No single group leads forever. That's actually one of the healthiest things about a durable bull market: Rotation.
Today's market is a good example. The Magnificent 7 (Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla) are still some of the strongest businesses on the planet. But they're no longer the strongest performers in the market. As a group, they've underperformed on a relative basis and sit >10% below their 52-week highs. Meanwhile, small caps, value stocks, Industrials, and Financials have been quietly picking up strength.
This kind of shift is normal. When a group of stocks pauses after a strong run, investors start looking elsewhere. And when more parts of the market begin participating, the overall trend tends to become more stable, not less.
That's not a reason to abandon the Mag 7. These are exceptional companies with real long-term prospects. But great businesses don't always produce the best returns at every stage of a cycle, and confusing the two is one of the more common investing mistakes we see.
Markets are always asking the same question: where's the next opportunity? Leadership changes are just how that process plays out.
Bottom Line
At MTE, we don't build portfolios around whichever sector looked best last quarter. We think about how leadership evolves over time and position accordingly.
Technology still matters. But the opportunity set right now is wider than it's been in a while. Small caps, value, Industrials, Financials are all worth paying attention to. A well-diversified portfolio isn't just a hedge against uncertainty. In a broadening market like this one, it's actually how you stay in the game as leadership shifts.
